Official says US sees Europe’s support of N Stream-2 unacceptable
WASHINGTON, Oct 19 (PRIME) -- Washington believes that the E.U. support of Russia’s Nord Stream-2 natural gas pipeline is unacceptable, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Wess Mitchell said late on Thursday at the Atlantic Council’s meeting.
“Western Europeans cannot continue to deepen energy dependence on the same Russia that America defends it against, or enrich themselves on the same Iran that is building ballistic missiles which threaten Europe. The same holds true for Central Europeans: it is not acceptable for the U.S. allies in Central Europe to support projects like Nord Stream-2,” he said.
The Nord Stream-2 project envisages construction of two lines of a natural gas pipeline with an annual capacity of up to 55 billion cubic meters, running from the Russian shore to Germany under the Baltic Sea. Russian gas giant Gazprom will implement the project together with Germany’s E.ON and BASF, Royal Dutch Shell, Austria’s OMV, and France’s Engie.
